Sanjay Gandhi National park is an 87 km reserved area in Mumbai, its headquarter is located in Borivali it was established in 1969.

to further expand the national park, it was merged with more forest from thane division.

If you have to keep the vehicle outside the park, then there is a lot of space for parking outside the park and its charges are 55Rs for a bike( two wheeler) and 200Rs for car ( four wheeler) and 300Rs for bus.

The best time to visit Sanjay Gandhi National park is August to March, summer is also less at this time.

In memory of Sanjay Gandhi the name of this park was changed from Borivali National park to Sanjay Gandhi National park, today's many people know this name of SGNP.

Kanheri caves (Historical place)

Kanheri caves were built in different periods; it flourished from the second century to the middle of the 11th century.

Even though all the caves are built in different time periods, all the caves are together.

There are a lot of 109 Caves and the numbers are mentioned on all the Caves.

The structure of all the Caves here is made by cutting the Rock. Here you will also see many statues of Buddha.

Kanheri Caves were the important Buddhist study centre for Buddhist monks and were pilgrim sites.the Caves were covered with huge basaltic rocks carvings. 

Although there are a total of 109 caves here but the biggest three cave here are 1st 2nd and 3rd

Gautam Buddha used to take education and meditation.

In the caves, you will get to see the big Ashok pillars. It is said that Emperor Ashok came here and used the rule here.

This is a complete visible worship centre where Buddhist monks sit and worship.

Third cave has a large Buddha statue and a stupa, but it has huge pillars. This carving has been done in a great way by cutting the mountains.

History of (SGNP) Mumbai 

Before independence the park was named as Krishnagiri National park.

Krishnagiri National park was created in 1974, when the area was 26 square kilometres at that time, and then expanded to the size of today by adding forest properties.

There are at least more than 25 species of migratory birds here.

Even before independence, the government took over the forest and their lakes and the entire place was declared as a protected forest.

In the centre of the park is the kanheri cave, then an important Buddhist centre for Buddhist teachings as a pilgrimage site.

And then later it was named borivali National park in the memory of prime minister Sanjay Gandhi this park was renamed as Sanjay Gandhi National park before 1981.
